Welcome to The Poi Master Series – Part 2
This section builds on the foundation you laid in Part 1 and launches you deeper into the art of poi. The focus now turns to mastering freedom of movement, exploring new rhythm patterns, and building real fluency across weaves, reels, butterflies, and body turns.
Expect a steady increase in both technical skill and flow-state connection, with drills and play designed to improve your control, symmetry, and adaptability — especially while turning.
Week / Phase 5: Circular Flow and Deepening the Foundations
In this phase, we begin to expand your movement across space. You'll practice turning fully in circles while keeping your planes clean and your posture relaxed. The poi-fu deepens with split-time opposites, reels, and a deeper understanding of the weaves you've already learned.
You’ll also begin to coordinate your body with the movement of the poi — learning how to follow the weaves with your torso, how to commit to overhead moves like butterfly over the head, and how to unravel patterns like the windmill and corkscrew. Expect tangles. Expect breakthroughs.
Week / Phase 6: Integration, Control, and the Foundations of Flow
This phase solidifies your rhythm and begins to tie everything together. The pirouette progression continues while your split-time opposites get more comfortable and powerful. You’ll reverse from wall to wheel planes, turn with poitruvian arms, and keep strengthening your reels.
By revisiting and refining foundational movements — like threading the needle, corkscrews, and Mexican wave — you're not just drilling moves; you're cultivating control. The key here is relaxed repetition with attention, allowing your technique and rhythm to become second nature.
Week / Phase 7: Whirling Foundations and Building Full-Body Flow
This phase takes you from upright shapes into full rotations and freedom. You'll practice turning safely and smoothly, learning how to carry momentum from reels into full-body movements like pirouettes and jiggies. You'll begin to truly embody opposites, learning how inward and outward can flow into one another as you turn.
You’ll also explore control techniques like buzzsaws and circle isolation. By the end of this phase, you’ll begin to understand the power of letting your body lead the poi — and not the other way around.
Week / Phase 8: Mastering Transitions and Embodied Spinning
In the final phase of Part 2, everything starts to click. You'll learn how to stall and reverse one poi while crossed, thread the needle with control, and turn freely in split-time butterfly. You’ll combine complex moves like fountains and windmills into extended flowing patterns.
This is also where more expressive and body-led techniques begin to emerge: full pirouettes, giant butterflies, and behind-the-back spinning. This phase is all about embodiment, confidence, and learning to dance freely with everything you've worked so hard to develop.
As always, take your time. Don’t rush the magic — repeat, explore, and have fun. The deeper you go, the more rewarding the practice becomes.
