Turning ~ Spotting Technique

Spotting is drilled as a practical turning skill for fan flow, borrowing from dance technique to improve control and reduce dizziness. You’ll practise choosing a fixed focus point straight ahead, keeping your gaze anchored as your body initiates the turn, then snapping your eyes back to that point as you complete the rotation.

Nikki Scarano frames spotting as a refinement for turns and a foundation for cleaner pirouettes, helping your rotation feel smoother and look more intentional. Use a mirror or a clear object on the wall as a consistent reference while you repeat full turns and build reliable timing between head, eyes, and body.
