Split time hip reels
Split-time hip reels built from stable same-time hip reels, focusing on clean timing and hand orientation. Nick Woolsey emphasises the thumb-in ‘catching an orange’ position at the small of the back to keep the reel path consistent and avoid the thumb-out hitchhiking habit, drilling both hands until it feels natural.
You’ll practise shifting from same time to split time by letting one poi (e.g., right in clockwise) take a slight lead as the heads pass the chest and shoulder blades, then settling into the front-front, back-back rhythm. Use resets back to same time to troubleshoot, and explore where small speed-ups help you hold the split-time pattern without drifting out of plane.
