5-beat weaves
Drill the 5-beat weave on poi with a focus on how the hands trade “lead” through each pass. You’ll practise the thumb-down wrist orientation and the timing of sending the active hand through the other hand’s “hole” so the correct finger leads the poi past the knee, rather than defaulting into a 3-beat weave.
Nick Woolsey emphasises wrist interaction as the functional mechanic: keep the wrists flexible and connected so the pattern unwraps cleanly on each side. Use this as a checkpoint lesson before building longer behind-the-back weave sequences, prioritising control and preventing tangles and self-strikes.
