How do you learn to dance freely with poi?

Nick Woolsey explores a practical way to stop repeating set poi patterns and build freer, more dance-led flow. The focus is on developing musicality and body movement first, so your poi choices arise from how you’re moving rather than from a memorised sequence.

You’ll practise putting music on and moving without poi to identify where you get stuck, then reintroduce poi while deliberately keeping the prop work simple and low-cognitive-load. By prioritising impulse, expression, and whole-body timing over complex moves, you reduce “poi-by-numbers” and create more organic transitions.
