Basic whirling footwork
This lesson drills basic whirling footwork for poi by building a repeatable pivot-step pattern for turning in continuous circles. You practise a four-count rhythm of pivot, step, pivot, step, focusing on weight placement and keeping the turn smooth and consistent.
Nick Woolsey emphasises joint-safe mechanics by pivoting on the ball of the lead foot while lifting the opposite heel, aiming to align the foot in the direction of travel to reduce knee and ankle torque. Train it slowly without poi first to develop muscle memory, then apply it to sustained whirl timing.
