Q&A: Keeping planes controlled while turning with reels

Nick Woolsey addresses a common issue when adding a turn to poi reels: the spinning plane gradually drifts as you rotate. You’ll focus on keeping a consistent plane through the full turn by using clear external feedback such as a wall, a ground line, or your shadow, so you can see exactly where the reel starts to angle.

The drill is to complete one controlled rotation and return to the same front and back planes, then build from single turns to multiple repeats. You’ll troubleshoot specific points where alignment slips, practise “waiting” and timing the swing to stay on line, and alternate turning directions to manage dizziness while refining consistency.
