Rhythm and beats intro

Work through a musicality foundation for poi by mapping rhythm to different points in the spin rather than only counting the down swing. Nick Woolsey demonstrates how relying on the bottom of the circle can limit timing once you add turns or more complex pathways.

You’ll drill counting beats on the bottom versus the top of the circle, and experiment with a syncopated ground/sky feel. The lesson also reframes rhythm using inside and outside points of the orbit, practising accents on the “in” (near the belly line) or the “out” (fully extended), and noticing the beat versus the “and” between beats.
